MEET RICK

Rick Chavez Zbur is a civil rights leader, environmental attorney, and our voice in the California State Assembly.

Before his election in 2022, Rick served as Executive Director of Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, and as president and board chair of California Environmental Voters. Rick has spent his career fighting for civil rights, working families, cleaner air and water, and affordable healthcare for all.

In the Assembly, Rick is fighting to lower costs for working families, block Trump and ICE from attacking our immigrant communities, fund Planned Parenthood and defend access to reproductive freedom, and invest in good-paying jobs that strengthen the middle class and keep California's economy competitive.

RICK'S PRIORITIES FOR CALIFORNIANS

HEALTHCARE FOR ALL

With Trump and Republicans in Washington cutting Medicaid and threatening Medi-Cal, Rick is fighting to make sure California families don’t lose the healthcare they depend on. In the Assembly, he has worked to cut through insurance barriers that delay treatment and make it harder for patients to get the care they need and is leading the fight for access to life-saving medications for patients with rare diseases like ALS and cystic fibrosis. Backed by nurses and frontline healthcare workers, Rick will not only fight these cuts and protect Medi-Cal, but will also work to lower healthcare costs and guarantee quality, affordable healthcare for all.

REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

With reproductive freedom threatened across the country, Rick has made protecting access to care a top priority. A former Planned Parenthood board member, Rick fought in the Assembly to safeguard abortion patients and healthcare providers from out-of-state legal attacks while securing vital funding to expand reproductive care in California. Rick will always defend legal abortion, access to contraception, and a woman's right to control her own body.

SAFER COMMUNITIES

Rick has made our neighborhoods safer and cracked down on crime. In the Assembly, he helped pass a bipartisan law giving police and prosecutors stronger tools to go after organized retail theft and repeat offenders. He has also worked to keep guns away from dangerous people by strengthening protections when someone makes violent or hate-based threats. Rick supports a practical approach to public safety that holds serious offenders accountable while investing in prevention, treatment, and safer communities.

PROTECTING IMMIGRANTS

As immigrant communities face escalating federal threats under Donald Trump, Rick is fighting in Sacramento to protect our communities and keep families together. He has fought back against ICE overreach in the Legislature, blocking unconstitutional targeting and shielding local communities from federal encroachment. Rick believes defending civil rights, due process, and equal treatment under the law is essential to maintaining a safe, just, and prosperous California.

JOBS & ECONOMY

Rick believes working people deserve good-paying jobs, safe workplaces, and a fair shot at getting ahead. In the Assembly, he passed a law strengthening bargaining rights for public employees and has worked to expand job training and protect thousands of film and television jobs threatened with leaving California. Rick will keep standing up for workers, supporting small businesses, and investing in good-paying jobs that strengthen the middle class and keep California’s economy competitive.

CIVIL RIGHTS & DISCRIMINATION

A civil rights attorney, former Equality California leader, and Planned Parenthood LA board member, Rick has spent his life standing up for marginalized communities. In the Assembly, Rick delivers results: authoring vital legislation to defend vulnerable youth, protect immigrant families, and safeguard patient privacy. Whether standing up for reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality, or immigrant neighbors, Rick knows that an attack against one community is an attack against all. He will always fight for our rights, dignity, and safety.

CLIMATE CHANGE &
THE ENVIRONMENT

As an environmental attorney and former President of California Environmental Voters, Rick has spent more than 25 years fighting for bold action to combat climate change and keep our air and water clean. In the Assembly, he has passed laws to expand clean energy production and help working families and communities transition to a clean energy economy. Rick will keep standing up to polluters; protecting our air, water, coastline, and public lands; and investing in clean energy that creates good-paying jobs, lowers costs for families and reduces pollution and harmful toxins that cause cancer, asthma and lung disease.

AFFORDABILITY

Rick knows families are working hard but still struggling to keep up with the rising cost of everyday life. In the Assembly, he has worked to lower utility bills and protect people from skyrocketing insurance premiums or losing their coverage. Rick has also fought to block Trump’s tariffs that raised the price on groceries and everyday goods and worked to protect consumers from corporations ripping them off with price gouging. Rick will keep working to make everyday essentials more affordable for Californians.
